Windsurf Builds Its AI to Rethink Coding
Windsurf launches SWE-1 models to move beyond code completion and reshape how engineers build software with AI

🌟 Good morning,
Today’s sky isn’t the only thing full of potential—Windsurf just built its own AI brain to reimagine the future of coding, and it’s shaking things up even as it joins OpenAI’s empire. Innovation never sleeps, and neither should your curiosity.

Samaya AI just banked $43.5M, backed by NEA, Eric Schmidt, and Yann LeCun, to bring domain-specific AI to the financial world. Unlike generic models, Samaya’s AI is tailor-made for finance—automating investment reports, answering complex questions, and backing every insight with hard data.
Its newly launched Causal World Models can forecast economic shifts with precision, like the impact of immigration on inflation, using 1,100+ data points. Already trusted by Morgan Stanley and hedge funds, Samaya is scaling fast, proving that in finance, specialized AI beats general-purpose every time.
Funding Roundup
Hedra raises $32M Series A from a16z to power AI-generated talking baby podcasts. The 2023-born startup lets users create expressive 3D character videos using its Character-3 model — now fueling a viral podcast trend. Fresh funds will help train new models, enhance customization, and boost interactivity for creators and enterprises alike.
Upscale AI raises $5.5M in seed funding from M12 and others to revolutionize streaming ads. The AI-native platform uses generative AI for fast, personalized video creation and machine learning to optimize programmatic media buying on streaming services. With streaming dominating screens, Upscale AI aims to boost ad performance, efficiency, and ROI for brands like Lalo and Branch Furniture.

TODAY IN AI
Windsurf builds its own brain
Windsurf, known for its “vibe coding” tools, just dropped its first in-house AI models—SWE-1, SWE-1-lite, and SWE-1-mini—designed not just to write code, but to engineer software. This marks a big shift for the startup, which until now relied on models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Here’s the kicker: Windsurf is reportedly being acquired by OpenAI for $3B, yet it’s launching its own competing models. Why? To own more of the AI stack and break free from the limits of current tools.
SWE-1 performs on par with GPT-4.1 and Claude 3.5 on internal benchmarks, and was trained to tackle real-world dev environments—IDEs, terminals, long-running tasks—not just code snippets. The company calls it a “proof of concept,” hinting more models are coming.
The message is clear coding is just the surface—Windsurf wants to redefine how engineers build software with AI.
SYNC FAST
OpenAI’s Sam Altman wants ChatGPT to remember your entire life — from emails to every book you’ve read. He envisions a tiny model with a trillion-token memory acting as your all-knowing, lifelong assistant. Sounds futuristic and helpful, but trusting Big Tech with your digital soul? That’s where things get chilling.
Anthropic blamed Claude AI for a citation error in a legal filing, calling it an “embarrassing and unintentional mistake." The chatbot added incorrect authors and titles, making a real source seem fabricated in a copyright lawsuit. It’s the latest courtroom mess caused by AI hallucinations sneaking into legal documents.
Microsoft laid off 2,000 workers in Washington — and over 40% were software engineers, Bloomberg reports. The timing raised eyebrows, coming just weeks after Satya Nadella revealed AI now writes up to 30% of the company’s code. Microsoft denied commenting on whether AI-driven coding played a role, saying the cuts target management layers.

Amazon drones crashed after sensor failures

Image: Bloomberg
Amazon’s drone dreams took a hard fall literally, after two Prime Air drones crashed within minutes of each other in December. The cause? Faulty lidar sensors mistook mid-air for touchdown during light rain, triggering the drones to kill their own propellers.
Digging deeper, investigators revealed Amazon had removed a key backup: squat switches — physical landing sensors that might’ve caught the error. The newer MK30 model relies more on software and computer vision, trading old-school hardware for sleeker tech — and perhaps, more risk.
Amazon insists its drones remain FAA-compliant and safer than ever, but this saga highlights the growing pains of merging AI with real-world aviation. As the company expands drone delivery in the U.S., UK, and Italy, one thing’s clear: even high-flying ambitions need a reliable landing strategy.
MORE TO KNOW
Pinterest blamed an “internal error” for mistakenly banning user accounts and says many have now been reinstated. Users were furious over sudden suspensions with no clear explanation or appeal success. While Pinterest denies AI moderation was at fault, it hasn’t detailed what exactly went wrong.
Epic says Fortnite is now offline on all iPhones after Apple blocked its latest App Store submission. The game was pulled even in the EU, where it was allowed via third-party stores. Epic blames Apple, calling the review process unfair and “weaponized.”
YouTube just launched a weekly US podcast chart, ranking shows by watch time. Joe Rogan’s podcast sits at #1, with updates dropping every Wednesday. Only full-length, creator-tagged podcasts are counted — no Shorts or clips.

Xiaomi’s Civi 5 Pro

Image: Xiaomi
Xiaomi is gearing up to launch the Civi 5 Pro, and it’s making noise where it matters most cameras. Confirmed by Xiaomi’s Lu Weibing, the phone will pack a triple Leica-powered rear setup, each with 50MP sensors, including a wide, ultra-wide (15mm), and a likely 2.5x telephoto (60mm).
On the front, expect dual selfie shooters, with at least one being a 50MP autofocus lens. Inside, it’s rumored to house a Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chip, 16GB RAM, and a massive 6,000 mAh battery—all wrapped in a slim 8.1mm profile.
With official teasers flooding in, the launch is just around the corner—and Xiaomi’s clearly aiming to raise the smartphone camera bar again.

Did You Know? Quantum computers use qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously, unlike classical bits. This enables them to solve complex problems, like factoring large numbers, exponentially faster. Google's Sycamore achieved quantum supremacy in 2019, performing a calculation in 200 seconds that would take a supercomputer 10,000 years.
