Chime’s IPO play is finally public

Image: Chime

After months of quiet rumblings, digital banking giant Chime officially filed its S-1 for a public debut, eyeing a potential $1 billion raise. The docs, while still leaving key blanks (like pricing and share count), signal serious intent: the $25B-valued fintech is backed by an A-list crew of VCs and has enlisted top-tier bankers like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs.

Here’s why Wall Street is watching: Chime pulled in $1.67 billion revenue in 2024 with just $25 million in losses, a sharp turnaround from its $203 million deficit the year before. Q1 of 2025 alone brought in $519M — a near-profitable trajectory with growth intact. With 8.6 million active users across debit, savings, and credit products, it’s one of the few consumer fintechs showing real scale.

And there’s a spicy subplot: Chime revealed a $33 million sponsorship deal with the Dallas Mavericks, while CEO Cynthia Marshall sat on Chime’s board. That jersey logo didn’t come cheap, and some argue that without it, the company might already be in the black. Regardless, Chime’s IPO is shaping up to be one of the biggest fintech tests of 2025.

TODAY IN AI
Google Gemini everywhere

Image: Google

It’s official: Google’s Gemini AI isn’t just staying in your phone—it’s strapping onto your wrist, popping up on your TV, slipping into your headset, and riding shotgun in your car.

In a pre-I/O teaser, Google revealed it’s rolling out Gemini to Wear OS smartwatches and Google TV, part of its broader plan to eventually retire Google Assistant in favor of its more conversational, context-aware AI brain. Imagine setting reminders mid-jog or asking your watch which restaurant your friend emailed you about no need to fumble for your phone. Whether your hands are full of cookie dough or gripping handlebars, Gemini's there with hands-free smarts.

On Google TV, Gemini’s stepping in to recommend content and answer questions. Need a kid-friendly action flick or a crash course on the solar system? Just ask, and the right YouTube video or movie list pops up like magic.

Next stop: XR. Gemini’s landing in Android XR, powering immersive experiences on devices like Samsung’s upcoming Project Moohan headset. Planning a vacation? It’ll surround you with maps, videos, and local tips in 3D space your itinerary comes to life, Minority Report-style.

And yes, cars are in on the action too. With Android Auto integration coming soon, Gemini will help you find EV chargers, summarize messages, and serve up news all while you're on the road. From workouts and binge-watching to virtual travel and daily commutes. Gemini is not just a smarter assistant—it's an everywhere assistant.

xAI missed its own May 10 deadline to release a finalized AI safety framework, first promised at the AI Seoul Summit. The draft report lacked real risk mitigation plans and applied only to future models "not currently in development." Despite Elon Musk’s public AI doomsday warnings, watchdogs rank xAI’s safety practices as among the weakest in the field.

Audible is giving select publishers AI tools to turn books into audiobooks using 100+ AI voices in English, Spanish, French, and Italian. They can choose a fully managed or self-service option, plus access upcoming AI-powered translation tools. Amazon says this will speed up production and expand global audiobook access — no studio needed.

Android just got a Gen Z glow-up

Image: Google

After an accidental early reveal last week (classic Google), the company officially dropped Material You's louder cousin, Material You Expressive, a bolder, springier, and more vibrant design language debuting with Android 16. Think bright purples, bubbly animations, oversized fonts, and a serious nod to that youth appeal, all wrapped in a UX designed to nudge your eyeballs exactly where Google wants them.

There’s more than just fresh paint: Live Updates, Android’s answer to Apple’s Live Activities, now shows real-time stuff like food deliveries or ride tracking across your lockscreen and always-on display. And yes, Quick Settings tiles are finally customizable, resize and rearrange like it’s iOS, but with that Android flavor.

This redesign is as much about wooing Gen Z as it is UX polish. Google even cites that 87% of 18–24-year-olds prefer expressive design. Whether that’s enough to lure iPhone-loving teens away from their blue bubbles? Bold colors can only go so far.

MORE TO KNOW

PayPal has launched tap-to-pay on iPhones in Germany, letting users pay at Mastercard-supported terminals using NFC. The move comes after EU laws forced Apple to open iPhone NFC access to third-party apps. For now, it’s iPhone-only — no Apple Watch support just yet.

Google is rebranding its Find My Device app to Find Hub and adding ultra-wideband (UWB) support for precise tracker location. UWB rolls out later this month, letting devices like Moto Tag finally unlock their full tracking potential. The upgrade brings Android closer to Apple’s AirTag-level accuracy, with satellite features coming soon too.

Did You Know? In 2025, Microsoft introduced the world’s first quantum chip using a new Topological Core architecture, paving the way for quantum computers that could soon solve complex industrial problems-like breaking down microplastics or inventing self-healing materials-tasks impossible for all today’s computers combined.

Till next time…
